Off-season Decisions

It’s every fans’ least favourite time of the year.  It’s the day after your team gets eliminated from the playoffs and all the players are parting ways.  Unfortunately some players, such as Ray Emery and Joe Corvo (at the deadline) also take their parting shots.  However, here are some thoughts for you armchair GMs in Ottawa.

Even though Emery professed that he was not a ‘cancer’ in the dressing room, anyone that loosely followed the Ottawa Senators this year knows that he was a major distraction to his teammates.  Rayzor even had the nerve to tell reporters that he was not interested in speaking and left his teammates to answer questions meant for him.  His teammates weren’t so positive on the situation: [paraphrased] “At the end of the year, he started playing hard and working hard,” said Dany Heatley.  So was he not working hard before?  Enjoy your money Ray, you’ll be nothing more than a cash grab in the eyes of Sens fans.

Wade Redden once again dodged questions about him returning next year.  He knows, GM Murray knows and we all know that he will not be playing with Sens Army next year.  He was a good member of this community and played with class for the 11 seasons he was here but it’s time to move on for the good of both the organization and Wade.  For all of you that think he should be signed at a discounted price, consider this:

Tom Preissing, Brian Pothier and Joe Corvo were all chased out of town because they were about/or they were being paid $2.5 million per year while being 5th or 6th defenseman on the team. Neither of them played on the PK, and were 1B options on the PP.

The same can be said for Redden next year. Even at $3.5 million, he’s not going to play on the PK in front Phillips-Volchenkov or Schubert-Commodore (or some other defensive stall worth that we sign). I can see the Sens pushing hard for Meszaros and/or Lee to get more ice-time with the big boys on the PP and probably Schubert for his ridiculously strong shot. If we re-sign Stillman, he’ll probably continue to man the point on the PP too.  So Redden’s specialty team time will probably drop too. So, paying a guy that squeaks on the Specialty Teams once in a while just doesn’t make any sense. Especially at $3.5+ million.  Thanks for the good times Wade.

The veterans that were brought in at the trade deadline are all Unrestricted Free Agents this summer.   While Mike Commodore and Cory Stillman have expressed the possibilities of re-signing with Ottawa, Martin Lapointe and his $2.4 million contract appears to be heading elsewhere.  If Commodore and Stillman can be re-signed for roughly $3.5 million I think GM Murray has to bring these guys back for another run next year.  This will also negate the fact that we traded Joe Corvo and Patrick Eaves essentially for nothing.  For the record, Martin Lapointe was traded for a 6th rounder, so if walks away from contracts it’s not as much of a loss.

What to do with the young guns?  Nick Foligno and Cody Bass definitely earned their way on the NHL roster next year.  Will Bass continue his 4th line center duties or will he replace Chris Neil?  Nick Foligno was dynamite in the playoffs and will slot in nicely alongside Mike Fisher and possibly Shean Donovan should the later be re-signed.  Brian Lee will be playing on the blue line next year with the Senators and he will probably log many of the minutes freed up with the departure of Redden.

Here’s a lineup that I’d love to see next year:

Forwards:
Heatley-Spezza-Alfredsson
Foligno-Fisher-Stillman
Matt Cooke -Kelly-Donovan
Schubert-Bass-McAmmond

Defensive pairings:
Phillips-Lee
Volchenkov-Commodore
Meszaros- Alexei Semenov

Power Play 1:
Alfredsson-Spezza-Heatley
Stillman-Meszaros

Power Play 2:
Foligno-Fisher-McAmmond
Schubert-Lee

Penalty Kill 1:
Cooke-Kelly
Phillips-Volchenkov

Penalty Kill 2:
Bass-Fisher
Commodore-Schubert

Goalies:
Martin Gerber
Brian Elliot

Ottawa Senators Off-Season Starts Tonight

Well… the off-season stats in mid-April this year as opposed to mid-June.  Without a doubt this season’s disappointment is the straw that broke the camel’s back for the core of this team.

Without a doubt this team just needs to change.  The core has played together for too long and they all basically know they are ‘untouchable’ with the Senators.  Comfort leads to complacency and I think that’s what happened in the Ottawa Senators’ dressing room.

Ray Emery and Wade Redden will be playing in another area code next year.  Redden twice blocked trades this season because he wanted to win a Stanley Cup with the Ottawa Senators.  His play in the 2nd half of the season told us otherwise.  His goal production has dropped nearly 66% since the 2003-04 season, his speed on the ice has dropped considerably and his once crisp first passes out of the defensive zone regularly miss their marks.

Emery was trusted with a long-term contract in the off-season but also miserably failed to live up to the increased expectations.  Yet, he didn’t even seem to have a problem with losing his number 1 spot, nor did he seem to care about his teammates downward spiral.  Since he is under 25 years old, his contract can be bought out at 33% which means the Senators would be on the hook for around 650K per year for the next 4 years.  In my opinion, especially with the cap expected to rise to $56 million next year, buying out his contract is a no-brainer.

However amid all the injuries and questionable play, a few diamonds arose from the rough.  Shean Donovan proved again that he is a great depth player for a playoff run.  Cody Bass will be a great addition to our 4th line next year and will probably play alongside Donovan all year.  Nick Foligno was arguably the Sens top forward in Game 2 and appears to be a shoe-in for the big team next year.  The same can be said with Brian Lee who will definitely see a large role on next year’s blue-line with the presumed departure of Wade Redden.

And obviously, Daniel Alfredsson.  An incredible return from an incredible captain that continues to be under appreciated.  Your efforts were well appreciated Mr. Alfredsson and kudos to the fans in attendance on sending him off in a proper fashion.

Round 1: Ottawa Senators vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Game 3 Preview – Update

In a stunning turn of events, Daniel Alfredsson is considered a game time decision for tonight’s Game.  He will be taking the pre-game skate and will decide if his presumed torn-MCL is ready to play.

Obviously Alfie will not be at 100% but many would take the captain’s presence on the bench and in the dressing room will be inspiring to the rest of the team.  Alfredsson went a long way in securing himself a true NHL-caliber leader last year and his legend will grow even more if he can somehow find a way to will this team back into this series.

The lineup may look something like this if Daniel Alfredsson is a late addition to the lineup.  I would expect Alexander Nikulin to be scratched.

Forwards
Heatley – Vermette – Stillman
Alfredsson – Spezza – Foligno
Donovan – McAmmond – Neil
Schubert – Bass – Lapointe

Defence
Phillips – Commodore
Meszaros – Volchenkov
Lee – Redden

Round 1: Ottawa Senators vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Game 3

After mounting an unexpected comeback in Game 2, the Ottawa Senators may have found a second life. However you only get 4 lives in a playoff series and Pittsburgh still has all of theirs. Ottawa has never surmounted a 2-0 deficit in the playoffs and this year’s version of the Penguins is the wrong team to tempt fate.

Plain and simply, Ottawa’s best players have not while a young Pittsburgh team is being lead by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin who have combined for 10 points in the first 2 games of this series. Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza have 1 point between the two of them and 0 goals. To make matters worse, Jason Spezza appeared to have tweaked something in his leg during Game 2.

The Senators would have loved to steal Game 2 in Pittsburgh. Martin Gerber played outstanding and once again gave the Senators a chance to win the game. His strong play will hopefully continue tomorrow night back on home ice.

No word on the injury status of Daniel Alfredsson, Mike Fisher and Chris Kelly which probably means they will be out, as reported, for Round 1. In a perfect World, Luke Richardson would replace Wade Redden on the blue line. Richardson’s foot speed has dropped over the years but in a foot-race for a loose puck behind the net, my money would be on Luke. At least you know what to expect from the veteran, he’ll give you an honest effort unlike Mr. 6 (million).

After a continued strong end to the season Antoine Vermette has worked his up to 1st line duties centering Dany Heatley and Cory Stillman. Alexander Nikulin was recalled from the Binhampton Senators in the event Jason Spezza can’t play tomorrow night. The Sens projected lineup for Game 3:

Forwards
Heatley – Vermette – Stillman
Nikulin/Robitaille – Spezza/Nikulin – Foligno
Donovan – McAmmond – Neil
Schubert – Bass – Lapointe
McGrattan, Winchester, Richardson

Defence
Phillips – Commodore
Meszaros – Volchenkov
Lee – Redden

Goaltender
Gerber
Emery

There just simply isn’t a bigger game than tomorrow night. If the series goes 2-1 with another game on home ice at the Senators have a fighting chance.

Edit: Bruce Garrioch with the Ottawa Sun is now reporting that Alexander Nikulin will dress regardless if Jason Spezza is in the lineup or not. If Spezza does dress then we can expect Randy Robitaille, who’s play has been questionable at best, to join Alfie, Fisher, Richardson and Kelly in the press box.

Round 1: Otawa Senators vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Game 2 Preview

In yet another sad twist of fate for former-coach John Paddock, GM/coach Bryan Murray shook up his line combinations this morning.  One of Paddock’s greatest sources of criticism (and there were many) was the fact that he changed the lines too many times over the course of a game.

After last night’s lack of offensive production, a shake-up is needed but once again it begs the question: “Is the coach really the problem?”  I believe the Sens play over the past 6 weeks is quite indicative of the answer.  In any event, the Sens’ lineup should look something like this tomorrow night.  This is of course if Anton Volchenkov cannot dress after receiving a puck straight to the head in Game 1.

Forwards
Heatley – Spezza – Lapointe
Stillman – Vermette – Foligno
Donovan – McAmmond – Neil
Schubert – Bass – Robitaille

Defence
Phillips – Commodore
Redden – Richardson (replace Richardson with Volchenkov if he can play)
Lee – Meszaros

Goaltender
Gerber
Emery

I really like the line combinations up front.  Murray paired up offensive players with a player willing to pay the price in front of the net or in the corners.  Many Sens fans will be overjoyed to see Randy Robitaille secluded on the 4th line.  However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Robitaille is skipped for a few shifts in favour of Shean Donovan.  Robitaille’s style of play just simply doesn’t fit in as a 4th line checker where as Donovan excels in those roles.  Robitaille will most likely be a healthy scratch once the Senators start getting some bodies back.

Along those lines, Daniel Alfredsson reportedly had a workout session on the stationary bike today.  There are rumbles that he is eying a Game 3 or Game 4 return to action.  I just gave myself chills by giving my best impression of Stuntman Stu on the mic: “Starting at right wing… number eleven… your captain… DDAAANIIIEEEEELLL  AAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLFREDSSSSSSSSSOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNnnnnn!” with the crowd chanting: “ALFIE! ALFIE! ALFIE!” in the background.  Pretty magical if you ask me.

I’m a dreamer at the best of times.
