Many sources have reported that Jason Spezza and the Ottawa Senators have ageed to a 7-year $49 million contract extension.
This move is the latest in Bryan Murray’s fury of signings in his attempt to keep the Team’s nucleus for the next 5 years. In signing Spezza, the Sens have shored up the most potent line in the NHL until the 2011-12 season. The Sens will able to take a honest run at the Stanley Cup if this core is kept:
Daniel Alfredsson (signed until 2011-12)
Jason Spezza (signed until 2014-15)
Dany Heatley (signed until 2013-14)
Mike Fisher (signed until 2012-13)
Chris Phillips (signed until 2010-11)
In addition to Ray Emery, Christoph Schubert and Anton Volchenkov all of whom are signed until the end of the 2010 season.
As indicated before, the Sens have these players through upside and the plateaus of their careers. Unlike Daniel Briere who will be 37 at his Contract’s end, Spezza and Heatley will still be in their early 30’s. GM Murray is showing once again what makes him an elite GM at the NHL level.
Hopefully he’ll be around this time when the Sens hoist the Cup.
